High-level International Solidarity: WHO Director-General, Prince Harry and Princess Meghan Visit Gaza Children at the Specialty Hospital

26 Feb 2026

In a humanitarian gesture reflecting the depth of international solidarity with the children of Gaza, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, accompanied by Prince Harry and his wife Princess Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, visited the Specialty Hospital in Amman, where they were briefed on the conditions of a number of children from Gaza who were recently evacuated for treatment at the Specialty Hospital.

The delegation listened to moving testimonies from the children and their companions about the severe health challenges they have faced over the past two years, given the limited medical resources available as a result of the blockade and aggression against the Gaza Strip, and the resulting delays in receiving life-saving treatment. The cases included severe war injuries, blood diseases, and critical and complex cases requiring delicate specialized interventions. The medical team explained the treatment pathway for patients from the moment they were received at the Jordanian border, through the multidisciplinary treatment plan, to the stabilization of their physical and psychological conditions.

Dr. Fawzi Al-Hammouri, Director General of the Specialty Hospital, emphasized that these efforts are in line with the Royal directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II the “Jordanian Medical Corridor” initiative to treat 2000 children from the Gaza Strip, stressing that the hospital is putting all its medical and human resources at the service of this humanitarian mission. Al-Hammouri stressed on the importance of cooperation between the World Health Organization, the Jordanian Armed Forces, the Ministry of Health, and the crisis cell in coordinating medical evacuations from Gaza to Jordan.

For his part, Dr. Tedros expressed his deep appreciation for the role played by Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, in receiving refugees and treating patients from Gaza, and for the pivotal role of the Jordanian field hospitals in the Gaza Strip. He also expressed his admiration for the advanced level of medical care received by children, praising the competence of the medical, nursing and administrative staff, and the holistic approach that takes into account humanitarian and psychological aspects alongside clinical treatment.

Prince Harry and Princess Meghan also expressed their deep sympathy for the sick children and their companions, giving them a message of hope and encouragement and affirming their continued support for humanitarian and medical efforts aimed at improving the lives of children affected by health crises in the Gaza Strip. The visit had a tangible impact on the children and their companions, reflecting the spirit of humanity and international solidarity in its finest form.

This visit underscores the importance of international partnership and cooperation in addressing health emergencies and embodies a message of real hope for Palestinian children and their families, confirming that solidarity and humanitarian medical care can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by conflict and crises.
