The Neurology Section

The Neurology Section

The Section of Neurology at the Specialty Hospital offers comprehensive medical care for a broad spectrum of neurological conditions.

Referrals to our neurology services come from local, as well as international, health care facilities; especially from countries of the Arab World.

Highly-qualified neurologists work closely with diagnostic and interventional radiologists, neurosurgeons, physiotherapists, speech and swallowing therapists, physiatrists, and physicians from other specialties to provide optimized care for all patients. Specialty Hospital is a teaching hospital, and inpatients are under continuous and meticulous supervision by resident doctors, who are enrolled in a widely recognized residency program.

The evaluation, diagnosis, medical management and treatment interventions include the latest advances and most promising approaches to patients with neurological diseases. We provide care across a full range of neurological disorders, including stroke; intracranial hemorrhage; cerebral aneurysms; brain and spinal vascular malformations; carotid stenosis; primary and metastatic tumors of the brain, spine and nerves; meningitis and encephalitis; epilepsy; headache and dizziness; intervertebral disc disease; movement disorders such as Parkinson disease, essential tremor and dystonia; multiple sclerosis; nerve and muscle diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), peripheral neuropathy, myasthenia gravis and myopathies; Alzheimer's disease and other dementias; cerebral palsy and spasticity; hydrocephalus; metabolic and mitochondrial disease; mental/behavioral health disorders; and sleep disorders.

Our diagnostic modalities include the following:

  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan of the brain and its blood vessels (CT-angiography).
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spinal cord, as well as their blood vessels (MR angiography and venography).
  • Carotid doppler ultrasound, to assess blood flow to the brain.
  • Electroencephalography (EEG), to assess electrical activity of the brain in cases of epilepsy.
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG), to assess the function of the peripheral nerves and muscles.
  • Evoked potentials, to assess responses of the central nervous system.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, also called a lumbar puncture. This test uses a needle to remove a small sample of fluid from the spinal canal in the lower back, which is then sent to the laboratory for study.
  • Sleep studies, performed in our sleep laboratory; to help diagnose sleep disorders.

Our available therapeutic interventions include, besides our neurosurgical services, endovascular coiling of intracranial aneurysms, endovascular embolization of vascular malformations, carotid artery stenting, and endovascular thrombectomy and thrombolysis for acute ischemic strokes.

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation services are offered to inpatients and outpatients with disabilities by well-trained physiotherapists. The hospital has it own fully-equipped physiotherapy center where patients can get rehabilitation under expert supervision.
